We Can't Stop the Fire

It's hard to imagine it was about a year ago that parts of Griffith Park was on fire in that short blaze of fury. I remember being able to see parts of the fire coming home from work, and the concern I had for people and animals as the fire raged on.

Although I can't attend the opening tonight, I need to make a point to visit the DRKRM Gallery to view the exhibit, Aftermath: The Griffith Park Fire, a collection of photographs Colin Remas Brown took two days after the fire when he took his camera and his dog on a walk through the area. You can read a brief interview of Colin Remas Brown by LAist here.

I knew that the loss of that fire could not be fully calculated, and that many denizens of the canyon were lost, but I was never fully aware of the extent of the loss of lives and how violent this fire must have been to have engulfed so many without a chance of escaping.

His Flickr album is a stunning collection of images, and the sequence of the photographs creates a narrative of sadness of loss, but with a bit of hope at the end. Still, I would really love to see these images (shot digitally) in person, filling a physical space, and being able to see how people process the information.

The show opens tonight and will run through May 18.
